After the Eyeries Loop Walk, we stopped for lunch at Pedals & Boots Cafe on the way to Kenmare. It was such a lovely place with showers for hikers and bikers, bike rental, and amazing food.
I spoke with a local woman at the restaurant that I saw later that evening at a concert in Kenmare. She greeted me warmly at the concert - typical of the friendly Irish people we encountered everywhere.
Pedals & Boots is a small, rural cafe and bike hire & post office business run by Kilian and Jenny Murphy and their three sons on the beautiful and rugged Beara Peninsula. We are situated in Lauragh, midway between Kenmare and Castletownbere on Ireland’s stunning 2,500km coastal driving route The Wild Atlantic Way.
The Area…
Lauragh is a very scenic and archaeologically significant part of the Beara Peninsula. There are many stone circles, standing stones, ring forts and other places of archaeological and historical interest in the area as well as beautiful scenery and quiet country roads to walk or cycle. It is also a haven for hill-walking, fishing, boating or any outdoor activity. Mountains, rivers, lakes, woodlands and sea are all on the doorstep in this beautiful location.
The house was built by the Lansdowne Estate in the 1880s as a teacher’s residence for the Headmaster of the local primary school. This listed building is a perfect example of Lansdowne Estate architecture of that time.
The House…
Many headmasters lived in this house over the years and in 1965 Michael Murphy, Headmaster of the local school and his wife Mary (Kilian’s parents) bought the house from The Lansdowne Estate. They built on the post office wing in 1968 when Mary became Postmistress and moved the post office from where it was located at that time, on the Healy Pass Road.
