At the Reef

July 11

One of the things that surprised me at the reef was the lack of color. Under the water there is not much light, and therefore not much color. Coral is grayish white in color with some green algae. Because light is not reflected we don't see red under water. There are some blue and yellow and green fish. All of those great colorful photos we see of tropical fish require underwater lighting. Some of the fish that appear white in the photos are actually red at the surface.
